Sunday 29 September 2013

Day 18 - Sunday September 29th 2013

Today was the day when I realised I need my medication as that's been 3 weeks that I have been off my MS drug Gilenya....long story. My next delivery is Friday 4th October, looking forward to getting back on an even keel.

Moral of the story, keep taking your meds they are doing you some good.

Today was a bad leg day...that's all I seem to write about these days, but I am determined this is going to change. I have set myself a goal, by my 37th birthday, March 18th...I want to have no issues with my leg, hell I want to moonwalk out of that bar after some birthday drinks lol.

I think it's especially important to work towards a goal for your mental health in your general life but especially so when your battling against an illness...I'm too young...it's not going to beat me.

In my case it definitely a combination of a few things leading to my issues...lack of medication (a big no no), lack of sleep (2 hours tonight) lack of appetite or not eating correctly.

I took the Mustang out today but these hand controls are a nightmare...yeah the Mustang doesn't make the best disabled friendly car lol but this will certainly not beat me...practice makes perfect!!

I lost my appetite today, was nowhere to be seen.

Breakfast - Toast & butter, cup of tea

Lunch - None

Snack - Ice cream

Dinner - Burger

Day 17 - Saturday September 28th 2013

Saturday is the day I have my 7yo boy who is a handful and all the exercise I need of a day lol.

I was thrilled to hear from my personal trainer who has said they are putting their all into helping me get more stronger and fitter. They are having a frame designed with a step to help do heel drops etc.. to strengthen my legs. And various other ideas to help me...an angel sent from heaven :-)

My diet consisted today of mostly fizzy sweets....I know lol.

My left leg playing up still and I'm determined to sort this out. It's a weakness I think is coming from my hip, so will focus on this area. And build up my core strength also.

Not much to say of this day other than it was great to spend it with my son.

Breakfast - Toast and butter, cup of tea.

Lunch - None

Dinner - Small portion of chicken curry

Shocking I know.

Saturday 28 September 2013

Day 16 - Friday September 27th 2013

After 4am when I finally made it to sleep lol, not doing myself much favours...so what lol...as Jon Bon Jovi sang "I'll sleep when I'm dead".

Today I met with someone who has offered to help me in my battle, who has bags of experience and is a lovely person to boot.

Today I awoke very sore in the shoulder department, I don't know if it's sleeping on the couch or working muscles I haven't worked in a while. Most people would just go to bed, but I love my tv too much lol...maybe time for a new couch lol.

Symptoms wise today, this left leg is, to put it frank, pissing me off!!! Almost like dragging my foot and difficult to lift, don't know if it's coming from the knee or the hip. But not letting it get me down as I know, in time, I will get over this.

Well zero exercise today, but read some more of Dr Wahls book and relaxed listening to some music, and ordered lots of fruit and veg online for delivery.

Breakfast - None

Lunch - Tomato Soup

Dinner - Scrambled egg on toast, bowl of mixed fruit

One of those 'not hungry' days.

Friday 27 September 2013

Day 15 - Thursday September 26th 2013

Today I woke feeling under the weather,  not to mention my sleeping pattern is up the left and my diet has suffered somewhat, I have temporarily lost my Mojo.

I'm still very much suffering from last weekends exercise session overload. I have little to no patience and be careful, as like me, if you go all out you will be put more than a few steps back. There is no quick fix to feeling stronger with MS...it takes time!!!!

I have recommended Dr Wahls on here and her remarkable story. I did notice a massive difference fairly quickly into the start of following her diet. But with not feeling great these past few days, I have been slipping up in this department also.

I weighed myself today and lost 2lbs since last Thursday, not great but sill a loss....right?

Exercise was poor today and mainly consisted of standing more.

Breakfast - Bowl of cornflakes and milk, glass of fresh orange

Lunch - Bowl of chicken soup, apple, 2 x bananas, 500ml bottle of water

Dinner - Bowl of vegetable soup, corned beef and beans, strawberry trifle, 500ml bottle of water

Thursday 26 September 2013

Day 14 - Wedesday September 25th 2013

Tonight I slept for 2 hours, fatigue seems to be a thing of the past or perhaps sleeping on the couch watching horror movie all night doesn't help lol.

My fatigue is effecting me in different ways now, mainly my weak left leg is annoying me big stle now, so much so, i have kindly been offered help from someone who is experienced in this area...thank you. I am noticing also my speech slurring at times, great for those annoying sales calls, but otherwise not cool, but it's just one of those things.

For those out there with MS please try and stay strong and try and not get too disheartened. I read a story of a man who had it for nearly 70 years..yes 70 years. MS is certainly not a death sentence and this old dude died at 96 on crashing his car.

There is a fantastic autobiography by the TV star Montell Williams (who is also a sufferer) and he lives by his motto "I have MS, MS doesn't have me" to say he is in control is an understatement...see his youtube videos.

As far as exercise goes today I done very little. It important you know your limits and stick with them....don't be like me, lack of patience and looking for quick results, I'm still suffering from my exercising session on Sunday. It's also very important to rest and take your mind away...for me it either listening to my music,  loudly...or meditating. I learned Transcendental Meditation some years ago but after a refresher recently, I picked it up again.

Breakfast - Roll with butter, cup of tea

Lunch - Tuna, lettuce and kale, bowl of grapes, 500ml bottle of water

Dinner - Beans on toast, 500ml bottle of water

One of those not hungry days

Tuesday 24 September 2013

Day 13 - Tuesday September 24th 2013

I'm beginning to wonder why I had chosen to hide my illness from the majority of my friends, feel embarrassed about it and worse still, not taking it seriously until recently.

Like most things in this life you have to help yourself, especially when the medical service out there are very, very limited in dealing with MS. For a start they don't know what causes it, and what with the brain being so complex, it's the perfect excuse for the 'so called' professionals in claiming there is not much they can do, other than offer you the approved medicines out there. However I'm at a loss why they won't even discuss with their patients, the alternatives....healthy food and exercise, I'm converted, but don't take my word for it...watch Dr Wahls video below (it's amazing!!)

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KLjgBLwH3Wc

Copy & paste link.

It's nearly 4am and I can't sleep, but it's probably because I'm elated to have met someone who listened to my story, and was very nice and wanted to know more about the condition and how it affects me. Moral of the story is people do care.

Today I woke from a terrible sleep, and with aches and pains still from exercising like a madman the other day. I'm always stiff when I wake in the morning (no pun intended) a host of stretches and 30 mins on my treadmill works wonders for me.

Exercise wise I calmed it down today. 30x squats, 30x each leg marching on spot, 30x each leg straightening out from a seated position and holding for 5 secs, 100x reps working arms and chest. 30 mins muscle electro stimulator working calves, 30 mins working biceps.

Breakfast - 2 slices toast with butter, 2 glasses of fresh orange juice

Lunch - Tomato soup, bowl of grapes & raspberries, 500ml bottle of water

Dinner - (broke my rules) Spicy Chicken pizza 2 pieces (rest binned as it was awful) tin of diet coke

Monday 23 September 2013

Day 12 - Monday September 23rd 2013

So today I woke up mega sore on the couch from yesterday's exercises. My left leg and foot were very weak for a while but once I got moving, I felt better.

I could only manage 10 mins on treadmill. As it was such a beautiful day today, I took my Mustang for a cruise, still struggling with the hand controls lol. I parked put the seafront, turned my music up and fell asleep in my car for over 3 hours!!!

Breakfast - Cornflakes with milk, glass of fruit juice.

Lunch - Ham salad roll, packet of crisps, bottle of diet coke.

Dinner - Corned beef, beans, potatoes and onions, tin of diet Pepsi, strawberry trifle.

I walked at a steady pace on the treadmill for 30 mins 2 times.
Throughout the day I done 300 standing against wall push ups.
200 marching on spot, each leg
An hour spending raising a lowering my feet, akin to tapping to music, great exercises for the ankles, and especially for drop foot.
An hour using my electro muscle stimulator, 30 mins on legs, 30 mins on arms and chest.
Managed 12 mins standing up straight unaided...getting stronger everyday.
Seated lifting and extending legs, holding for 5 secs, 100 each legs
30 squats
500 arm and chest exercises, pulling on elasticated exerciser.

Day 10 - Saturday September 21st 2013

Today I woke feeling great, but not much chance for exercises as have my son today :-) My son Connor is only 7 but is a great help to his dad. He doesn't understand about nor heard the term MS but he knows his dad struggles from time to time and often nags me to exercise to help my legs lol.

So today was mostly spent doing father and son things, but we did exercise together. We both did 10 mins on treadmill and worked on upper arms with dumbells...30 reps per arm.

Breakfast - Bowl of cornflakes, cup of tea

Lunch - 2 x Lorne rolls with onions, cup of tea

Dinner - Haddock, chips, garden peas, 500ml bottle water

Friday 20 September 2013

Day 9 - Friday September 20th 2013

I spent hours out in my car trying to master the new hand controls....going to take a while. Nightmare!!

MS symptoms today was the weakness in my left leg, which made lifting my foot difficult and constant pins & needles in my hands.

Building up my leg strength, I carried out 30 mins on my treadmill,  30 reps of squats, 100 reps each leg marching on the spot,  50 reps of each leg marching on spot and 59 reps each leg seated, straightening leg out and holding for 5 secs. Electro muscle machine on various parts of lower body for an hour.

Building upper strength, 200 reps of using stretch exerciser., 100 reps standing press against wall. Electro muscle machine on various parts of upper body for an hour.

Thank you to all my friends for their messages of support,  it's amazing that so many of you have family and friends in the same boat.

Thursday 19 September 2013

Day 8 - Thursday September 19th 2013

I spent today trying to master the hand controls fitted to my Mustang, hell of a difficult, I'm either wheel spinning or breaking so hard almost to go through the windscreen.  I don't think Mustangs make great disabled vehicles lol.

I weighed myself and lost 5lbs from last week.

Lunch -  Tuna & cucumber roll, packet of crisps, bottle fruit juice

Dinner - Beef noodles, 500ml bottle of water

Wednesday 18 September 2013

Day 7 - Wednesday September 18th 2013

Breakfast - Cornflakes & milk, glass of fresh orange

Lunch - Chicken soup, 500ml bottle of water

Dinner - Chicken, green peppers, black bean sauce & fried rice, 2 x beers

Day 6 - Tuesday September 17th 2013

I am writing up Tuesday on Wednesday morning as I was having severe symptoms in my hands last night, namely numbness and pins & needles sensation. I organised on this day to have a company to come to my house today (Wednesday) to install hand controls in my Mustang which can be removed when I build up my strength.

I spent Tuesday determined to exercise loads!!!! Bad idea!!

Exercise should be moderate, but I was like a man possessed determined to exercise until I collapse.

I spent 30 mins on the treadmill increasing the speed from past couple of days. Over the course of the day I did 200 push up against wall, I did 100 squats, 300 each leg marching on spot, 200 seated extending legs straight and holding for 5 secs,  I beat my standing unaided time at over 9 mins, I also did 500 reps of my arm exercises.

I used my muscle stimulator on my calves for 2 hours throughout the day.

Breakfast - Porridge, Glass of fresh orange

Lunch - Bowl of grapes, strawberries, raspberries, banana, apple, 500ml bottle of water

Dinner - Pasta & meatballs, 500ml bottle of water

Monday 16 September 2013

Day 5 - Monday September 16th 2013

Today was a good day symptom wise. My leg stiffness open weakening cleared quickly. Before I started my exercises I went for a drive in my Mustang to blow away the cobwebs :-)

So I started with 30 mins treadmill on a flat slow pace, followed with a host of leg exercises.
30 rep squats, 30 reps each leg marching on spot, 30 reps each leg straightening and holding for 5 secs, 100 reps of arm exercises pulling on elasticated device, 30 reps standing push ups against the wall.

Carried out these exercises and reps 3 times today.

Snack - Bowl of almonds

Sunday 15 September 2013

Day 4 - Sunday September 15th 2013

Today I woke with a very stiff left leg (I fell asleep on the couch last night, so not the best of sleep). I also found it difficult to lift my left foot once I got up a started moving, but thankfully it eased off. As its my sons birthday today and not wishing to tire myself out, my exercises so far have been limited.

I marched on the spot lifting each leg for 30 reps each, also done 20 squats which was difficult and an exercise I need to concentrate on, 30 reps on my arm exercises.

Breakfast - Cornflakes and milk, glass of fresh orange juices

Lunch - Chicken & sweet corn sandwiches on brown, apple, 500ml bottle of aqua-fruita water

I plan on adding a part 2 this evening.

Saturday 14 September 2013

Day 3 - Saturday September 14th 2013

So i was out on the town last night, my walking was better i felt when under the influence or maybe the alcohol seduced me into thinking so lol. I also bought a kebab for heading home with :-(...i was drunk lol.

Today i have a hangover from hell, so exercises went out the window, but i did read some chapters from Dr Wahls new book.

I decided today to stop taking my Gilenya for a month and stick to Low Dose Naltrexone as an experiment as my walking got worse on Gilenya.

Breakfast/Lunch - Eggs & Bacon on toast, glass of fruit juice

Afternoon - Bowl of pineapple & peaches

Dinner - Chicken breast, broccoli, sprouts, carrots & garden peas, 500ml aqua-fruita water, strawberry trifle

Friday 13 September 2013

Day 2, Part 2 Friday the 13th September 2013

Day 2, Part 2....

My leg eased after a while and I was able to do a comfortable walk for 15 mins on a slow pace on my treadmill. I also done 30 reps on each leg of stretching out legs from a seated position and holding leg straight for 5 secs on every rep. After a break I attached my muscle stimulator on my calf muscles and spent 30 mins each side on a strong force setting whilst doing 100 arm reps stretching a bungee type thingy.

Afternoon snack - Bowl of green and red grapes, blueberrys and 2x bananas

Dinner - Canned salmon, mackerel, cabbage & kale.

Off out and going to try my best to avoid takeaways at all cost in my drunken state...wish me luck lol.

Day 2 - Friday September 13th 2013

Friday the 13th right enough.....

I woke up today with a very heavy left leg that refused to bend at the knee. I am going to persevere with my muscle stimulator and I appreciate things don't get better overnight, patience is the key!!

As of yet, 1.15pm, I have yet to do some exercises, I am cautious of the fact I am out on the town tonight and don't want to over tire my leg. I don't know about some of you, but I feel I walk better when I have had a few alcoholic drinks, sure we slur our speech and walk like we're drunk at times so let's give them what they think lol. I am not condoning you guys to go out and get drunk, but go out and have a few and enjoy yourselves. Don't hide yourself away...get out there!!!!

Breakfast - Porridge with pumpkin seeds, glass of fresh orange juice

Lunch - Salmon, seaweed, kale, lettuce, yellow and red peppers, fruit cocktail trifle, 500ml bottle of aqua-fruta

Now to start my exercises...I will try and post before I go out tonight.

Thursday 12 September 2013

Day 1 - Thursday September 12th 2013

Okay, so today i officially start documenting everything i do in my fight...

So i weighed myself today and came in at 14 stones (196 lbs), i purchased a Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation device today and had it wired up to my weak left leg, hopefully it will make a difference and strengthen my muscles. I also done 30 reps per leg in lifting my leg from a seating position (like marching while seated) i also did another 30 reps per leg lifting and straightening and holding whilst sitting. I done 100 reps with an elasticated device stretching my arms out from my chest.

Today i managed to stand for 6 mins straight unaided :-)

I also contacted MS Revive centre in Glasgow to enquire about both home physiotherapy sessions and an FES device.

Today i ate the following -

Breakfast - Porridge with pumpkin seeds, 500ml bottle of aqua-fruta water

Lunch - Tuna and onion sandwhich on brown, bowl of white and red grapes, 500ml bottle of aqua-fruta water

Afternoon snack - Small fruit trifle, bowl of pumpkin seeds

Dinner - Steak, various peppers, onions, leeks, lettuce, kale, 500ml bottle of aqua-fruta
